there were a lot of ruffled feathers, as popular (emily, jack, ava, madison, ashley) are scorned there, ditto for names creatively spelt (myranda, keighlee). names starting with the first letter, or rhyming were pretty much flamed.

can you imagine? i purposely chose names that i thought NOT to be trendy. you don’t see a lot of j, s or c’s running about the place. or at least i didn’t think you do. do you? trendy? i know catherine zeta jones named her daughter carys…but i didn’t think a lot of other people had. and sela, trendy?
one of the more honest triplet mums wrote that her feelings were hurt knowing that someone didn’t like her child’s name. but to be honest, probably a lot of people don’t like her child’s name.
not just her child, ANY child. i have lots of friends who have named a child something i wouldn’t. (obviously! i go for trendy names, apparently!)
but you know what? after you see and touch that child whose name you don’t really like, you don’t really think about the name, you think about the baby. that’s the way it is. i haven’t run across a baby called anything i find truly offensive like adolf, but i do think the theory would hold true even then.
the meanings behind our children’s names is very important to magnificent and me. apparently it is bad that i chose the welsh version of carys, instead of going with karis. but my grandfather used that welsh expression when he said goodnight to us…carys dunwell. my daugher’s name is carys.
jasper, he is precious. i am sorry there is a national park by the same name, and that some people think the name is red neck and others think it is posh.
sela – pause and reflect. the name after virtually every psalm. i love the meaning, i love the way her name floated in a room amongst the bleeping machines. rest now, sela. ssshhh shhh sela. when laying in the hospital ward trying to choose a name for her, we test run the names by speaking them aloud. sela. it gave me peace.
sebastian – the patron saint of soldiers. my grandfather was a soldier. and although some believe the name sebastian is too "snooty"…i have a tough time remembering that when he has collapsed in years into my arms, weeping because someone on the bus sat on the special drawing he had made for me.
i don’t think you can love someone and not love their name.
(someone said it doesn’t matter what their name is, it matters the tone you speak it in. that’s nice in theory, but if you had heard me bellowing CARYS! on the playground not 40 minutes ago, you would wonder….)

Some people really have too much time on their hands…and those same people seemingly have low self-esteem that they need to rate and berate and catergoirze other people’s choices for the names of their children… It doesn’t make sense to me… It never made sense when we would share potnetional names and people would give nasty looks, or say NO, you can’t name a child that!!! Who are they to say anything….
I wouldn’t have picked yours as trendy either…but I would not have rated them in the first place.. I would have called them and what any birth (esp.mulitple birth is) a utter and total amazing miracle and gift from God… even if you don’t believe in God…somethings are just true!!! Your three and all the others out there no matter their names (plain or trendy, traditional or movie staresque) are extrememly special and important to each family!!! And yours is the first and only family I know w/ triplets!!!! So, there is my two sense… give my love to the four…trendiness and all!!! xo Lyns

Somebody has WAY too much time on her hands to go through and rate the names that people have chosen for their children. I would have been offended as well no matter what she thought of the name I chose for my daughter. It’s such a personal decision. I can’t imagine my daughter having any other name.
Having read your blog for a while now, whenever you post pictures, I couldn’t picture any different names for any of them. The names seem to fit the child. 🙂

I’m a first time poster and have been curious about the pronunciation of Carys’ name. This seems like a good opportunity to ask! In my mind I read it is “ca” (pron. like the “ca” sound in “cap”) and “rys” (pron like “Reece” as in Reece Witherspoon). Am I right? I’d love to confirm this because I always think to myself what a pretty name it is and I’d hate to be getting it wrong!
And just quickly, I’ve wanted to say for a while how much I enjoy your blog. You often raise ideas that make me think and I also love the picture you create of life in another country. Reading about your family is always a nice little break from my working day!

Names are something that we are struggling with for this baby. Like you, meanings are very important to us. I think that we have sussed a boy’s name but a girl’s name – that is another matter. I have a name that I really like but as it has the same root as our firstborn I really don’t think that we can use it. This baby needs to know that they are special in their own right.
I agree with you that you love names because you love the people associated with them – not the other way around. By the way I love your children’s names.
my family all BEGGED me not to name our son Basil. We did anyway, because my husband was studying St Basil in school and liked what it stood for, and really simply…we prefered it to any other of our considerations. My mom, in joking (kind of), said she wouldn’t hold him if we named him Basil. I can tell you now that his name hasn’t stopped her from loving (and holding) him like crazy.
when i told my mom about the whole *yucky triplet names* thing (mine were on the list), she said, “you could have named these kids sh*tface and as*wipe, i would think they were beautiful.” it was shocking to hear my mom swear, but basically you’re both right. it’s not the names we REALLY love…

it’s just who he is. he isn’t a name, he is a boy. he defines the name, not the other way around.
