sorry for the mini mummy meltdown yesterday. i was in a bad mood. i also (as is typical) over reacted. things could be so much worse. the babies are all gaining weight (albeit carys really slowly) and growing.

and there was humour in the appointment. the doctor (i requested and saw the head of the department, who has been in charge of the babeolas since day 1) looked at jasper and said,

no more double chin. you are getting handsome now.

and jasper was all flirtatious, mouth wide open and smily, tongue curled to the top of his mouth, turning the side of his head thing. dr lam went to probe his tummy, and she was pulling off his jeans. and having some trouble.

jeans are so tight! she exclaimed. trying to be a teenager already.

i don’t think chasing. that requires wayyyy too much effort.

the other humour also involved jasper. we had been getting quite worried, because our jasper was looking quite jaundiced. i mentioned this to dr lam, who said, "yes, i saw that as well."

then she said, not asked,

he’s no longer drinking much milk, is he.

no, i managed, he much prefers to eat.

and what is he eating.

well, pumpkin, sweet potatoe, carrots….

yes, he is turning into what he is eating.

so the opposite of yellow on the colour wheel is blue, jasper now needs to be eating more blueberries and aubergines.

now, this doesn’t sound too funny, but remember the cultural differences here. the chinese tend not to joke around as much as north americans  might in professional meetings and surroundings. dr lam is head of a department and has a LOT going on. the fact that she joked about jasper excuses the fact that she didn’t gush about what miracles they are, how they are almost a year old, and how beautiful the girls are.

i’m sure she will next appointment.

  1. Glad today is better, and your doctor sounds wonderful.
I’d noticed that Jasper had a bit of an orange tint to his nose in his pictures, and I simply assumed that he’d been getting his carrots! That or you’d been slathering his cute little nose with some QT lotion – remember that from growing up? 🙂
Don’t worry about the gushing – that is what we are for.
Your babies are BEAUTIFUL, they are doing so well, and I cannot believe that they are almost one year old!

  2. Tess,
Glad to hear you are feeling better today. But explanations aren’t necessary. You are wonderful no matter what mood you are in.
I also have a complex at times with people not understanding the enormous miracle surrounding my child’s existance. But that’s why God made our hearts big enough to hold all of this love for them. With us around, none of them will want for admiration and awe. We are the lucky ones who get to take in their every move. Isn’t it wonderful?

:DDDDDDDDDDDD And beets, for the extra nice pink touch. (You do know it turns the urine pink right? No worries).
    Babies aren’t beautiful, they’re BEAUTIFUL.

  4. Tess, I have seen many children with that carrot jaundice – it is quite amusing really. I’m going to briefly turn professional on you and recommend that now your children could be getting a range of colours for fruit and veggies and that is a good way to ensure that they are getting all their vitamins. Ideas include: Red – tomato, capiscum, strawberries, red onion, yellow – potatoes, pureed corn (probably too little yet for kernel corn huh?), banana, Green – avocado, broccoli, peas etc, blue/Purple – blueberries, cherries, eggplant, plums and orange – I think that Jasper’s probably got that one sussed.
I just did a session on child’s nutrition on TV here so anything else you’d like to know – just email me.

  5. aubergines? It’s one of my favorite words from the BBC home makeover shows – ‘Let’s paint it aubergine’ – but I thought it a colour (with the u, not an American color it isn’t). What type of food is it?
