tsunami’s have tired me.
i don’t mean bored, or hardened. i mean wearied. i don’t want to watch television, open a newspaper, or even talk to a lot of people, because the main topic is tsunami.
we have donated money, but money is going to save some lives, not rebuild them. so many people have lost their livelihoods. yes, they are alive, but are now facing a life of poverty. their businesses were their future, their way of preparing a better life for their children. but for so many people, there are no more children, and no more businesses. it is just so sad.
it is no one’s fault, i would feel better if i could channel this anger at someone.
magnificent charles and i have a big decision to make now.
we have a reservation for kamala beach resort in phuket for february 8-15. we received a beseeching email from the owner yesterday saying the villa was still intact, please please come. the world needs to know it is safe to return to phuket. i have seen footage of tourists in phuket, know for a fact there are many divers and vacationers who are sunning themselves on beaches even today.
if we go, do we look callous? like we are saying to the others that died, "who cares, that was one month ago, we’re here and safe and having a great time, pass the tanning oil."
or, by going are we helping the thai economy? 40 per cent of thailand’s revenue comes from tourism.
magnificent charles and i want to do the right thing. we just don’t know what the right thing is, yet.

Tess, GO! By all means GO! You are going for all the right reasons…
1) Rebuilding the economy
2) Appreciating the beauty of this world, the beaches, the sun, ALL that God has created
3) To nurture yourself and your marriage
4) To offer support to those in Phuket who have to rebuild their lives by reinforcing that tourism is indeed alive and well
Turn off the tv. You are going my friend. So enjoy the reality of your life today in HK and worry about Phuket later.

I say go and maybe volunteer a little while you’re there if that will help soothe your holiday guilt. Supporting tourism is an important reason to go.
Go, they need the money. Plus, you may witness something in person that will help somehow, some way.
I say go. CNN right now is showing Phuket and saying it’s absolutely necessary that tourism remain strong in order to keep the economy intact.

Lauren had a wonderful idea to volunteer while you are there. True, not exactly what you originally planned to go for…..but that’s ok.
They need the tourism….and you need to go.

You go girl !! Do it for those of us who wish we could and cannot. Life is too short.
The vounteering idea posted by Lauren is a good one, see if you can help while there. It may be more therapeutic that you know.

You don’t know me, but I say go, too. For all of the reasons listed above. Go, go, go. It’s the right thing.
We live in Australia and had the same problem as you after the Bali bombings.
We decided to go for the sake of the Balinese who have no income except the proceeds of tourism. I know the same can be said for Phuket. I have been there many times and the beautiful people deserve our support.
GO! Definitely go. I understand your reservations about going, but you will be helping the people more in the long run to go than to stay home. Oh, and send me a postcard again if you go!
