i got this mass email the other day and it is so creepy i would like to share it with the rest of the world.
How Smart is Your Right Foot?
This is so funny that it will boggle your mind. And you will keep trying at least 50 more times to see if you can outsmart your foot, but you can’t.
1. While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.
2. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand. Your foot will change direction.
now, so that we are not seen as discriminatory (canadians! ha ha ha ha ha), i also tried this with my left foot (no, daniel day lewis was not with me), and got the same result. aggh!

argh! i do not need anything to break my illusion of complete control!
something else cool to try: write backwards. not very good at it? put a pen in your wrong hand and write forwards with your normal hand and write the mirror image with your wrong hand. your wrong hand should write a very good mirror image (backwards) version of what you are writing with your other hand. i’m told this is how they teach people in the navy to write backwards on the back sides of those glass navigation thingies you always see in movies.
🙂 The trick is to get the foot moving, and then forget about it. Put it on auto. Then concentrate thoroughly on your hand as you draw the sixes. Once you’re totally into the drawing of the sixes, you can then notice that your foot is still doing what you left it doing. As soon as you pay attention to your foot, however, it will stop doing the right thing, and start changing direction, even if it’s been puttering along against the power of the hand for an absurdly long time.
Annoying. 🙂
By the way, I hate you for posting this. 😉 (in a good way) I’ll be twirling and drawing sixes all day.
Huh, it didn’t work on me. I’ll have to have everyone in my office try it. 🙂
My computer died a few months back. Delighted to have found you and your family again 🙂 The kids all look so beautiful and healthy! Pat on the back for mom 🙂
Crazy! I’m gonna have to keep practicing until I get it…
Freaky.
But my husband is a drummer, which means he’s had to spend a lot of time learning to separate the movements of hands and feet from the other (so the left hand can hit one drum on 1 and 3 and the right hand can hit on all the 8th notes and the feet can hit the bass drum pedals on some weird syncopation blah blah blah)… and he can do it (though not very well)
Argh that is just too freaky. I too don’t like the feeling that I am not in control of my own foot.
Daughter number two could do it though?
Can anyone make cycle movement with your hands at the same time, but in different directions? I couldn’t do that either.
Thanks for the e-mail tess.
Hope you are having a good, relaxing and enjoyable time! How’s Wassin doing??
