magnificent has provided a succinct and accurate summary of our weekend on his blog, so i will write about: unsolicited applications.

word has gotten out that our embryos are "on the market". mc and i have received emails from people who had heard through friends that we were donating our embryos and wanted to suggest themselves, and also from other people who had read on the adoption agency’s board that the embryos were up for adoption, and even though they did not want to submit their name via the agency, they did a google search for lyons hong kong…and voila, found our email address. contacted us privately.

these "rogues" are not bad people. you have to admire initiative. but as potential couples get more and more creative (and bend agency rules), it does strike home that there are a real shortage of embryos as opposed to the couples desperate for a chance to adopt them.

one couple got a little over enthusiastic, and after i replied that we were going through an agency, kept sending me pictures of their house (repeatedly) and their wedding album. (they have been married for 10 plus years, why are the most recent pictures of their wedding?)

so it’s a bit overwhelming right now, and we just have put the topic to the back of our vomit soaked minds and will focus on it when we again have the strength.

two more topics to handle before leaving for holidays: 5,555 – talk to the doctors about the possibility of reglan for the babies. we need to determine what is causing this vomitting. gag reflex? overfeeding? where does it start, and why is it happening.

5, 556 – they need to see a dietician. they’re sick of milk, and want tasty food. however, topic 5,555 results when they eat food. but minus the milk and protein, they are missing out on some nutrients maybe (they find a lot of fruits too acidic) so i should probably get on a diet.

tomorrow is a landmark day…

there are approximately five weeks until we leave on holidays.

there are approximately 5,554 details to be taken care of between now and then.

some are semi important: i need to transfer money to the person who generously decided to GIVE us a nebuliser. (i only pay for shipping). i need to find someone to lend us a pack n play for two months. i need that pack and play to end up at my gran’s house in white rock. i need a food processor because as my three youngest have all proven today, if they eat anything that is not ground to the size of my pre-pregnancy bikini…they vomit.

others…eh, what can you do. i have two deadlines in the next week. i’ve done most the primary research, now just the rolling up sleeves and writing.

i am one of those people who gets the big jobs done first. forget the rolling stones, i get HUGE satisfaction from accomplishing a huge job. the problem is, once i get the job done, then i get lulled into a false sense of security, and ignore the 40 niggling, irritating little things that need to be accomplished!!! things on par with ordering new cheques, getting reimbursed for items i bought for the playgroup…stuff like that. i am itching to give the closets a good cleaning (ie: purge), but unless i get my tushie into gear, that may not happen.

the problem is, the babies are unutterably cute at times. and so much fun to be around. i took jay to PT today, and he was adorable. lazy, but adorable. when the physio stood over him and held his fingers and tried to get him to walk, he twisted his neck, looked up at her and raised his legs until they were parallel to the floor.

he should be standing, at least. she told me. standing alone and walking. he should be. she turns her eye to me.

are you too busy at home and not practising walking with him? she said.

sure i do, but you see what happens. i responded.

well, is he cruising around a coffee table.

sure, if he wants to.

you need to do this, she said, rummaged through a box and placed a ball on a table. i looked at my son and although it impeded his development, prayed he would do what i figured he would do. and oh, yes, who’s your mummathe j proceeded to crawl over to the bucket of toys the pt pulled the ball from, and busied himself investigating those, while the ball lolled about disconsolately on top of the table. ha ha ha ha ha! don’t say i need to practise with my kid.

i was so proud of us. we were a little tag team.

and carys is bouncing up and down, up and down, to express her delight. so fun to watch. sela’s all over the place and sebastian is my darling boy. i want to spend more time with them. (although i still hate bottle feeding them. carys has started holding her breath during feeding, right before she vomits…what is with that?)

i suspect it will all sort itself out in the end, after all, my insomnia ought to be able to take care of a few of those issues.

and from the adoption files – day three

not sure how to manage this question: someone interested in adopting the embryos who has seen our pictures asked if we are physically attractive people. they’ve seen the pictures. maybe they look airbrushed? not so…if you look closely you will see the vomit stains on the shoulder of my sweater….

embryo adoption…day two

the profiles began rolling in today….

the first one i read, i was CERTAIN they were the couple. until i read the second profile. and then i wanted them. but then the third profile arrived, and they were wonderful as well.

you see these pictures of lovely couples, and you read of the heartache they have encountered on their journey to parenthood. miscarriages, stillbirths, multiple failed IVF’s, corrective surgeries gone wrong.

how can we say NO to these people? i am looking at the telephone, wishing that i could call my re, do a quick cycle and get some more frozens. help everyone.

how unfair is it that couples have to politic themselves to us through a letter. choose us, please, here is why. it is so unfair…that their probably last opportunity to be parents comes through a letter.

just as fair as $10,000 worth of infertility medicine, ultrasounds, bloods, uterine lining checks, follicle retrieval, egg fertilization, embryo division, embryo or blastocyst transfer meets a temporary end when blood is drawn and analysed for the presence of HCG. it all comes down to a blood test.

and these letters. look at it objectively. would anyone pick charles and i to be adoptive parents? that the mum has epilepsy and the father travels a great deal and has been married before? how could i write a letter that could look past our "flaws" and convince a couple that we would be wonderful parents? i’d have a tough enough time using capital letters!

it is so difficult to choose the couple without knowing or knowing of them. what does a home study tell you? not a lot when you think of the numbers of families who have passed home studies who are later arrested for cruelty to children. genetic parents don’t need homestudies…should adoptive parents?

other issues: money, religion, ages, hobbies.

how important is appearance? when all you’re going on is photographs and the letter…you spend a lot of time looking at the photos. checking smiles. wondering if you’re imagining sorrow beneath their smiles, because you remember when you were recovering from a negative blood test, you felt your smiles never quite reached your eyes.

what if they are overweight? i’ve had my chunky monkey phases (rubenesque, shall we say), so if a couple has weight issues should i discount them? hypocrisy in the finest.

the vortex has begun. magnificent came up with the suggestion that we give the first eight "applicants" one embryo. that way we were helping everyone a little bit. not going to happen.

this is all about trust. we know that. we know God will help us make the right decision. our small group started praying for these parents about two years ago. we just have to trust.

do the right thing

this entry was written two weeks ago:

today i contacted embryos alive. why? because we have frozen blastocysts and embryos, and they need a family. so we are finding them one.

i feel very emotional, but very certain that GOD will lead us to the right couple. we have been praying for this couple since 2003, as has our small group!

we have been blasted as reckless for having more eggs fertilized than we needed, and have had many other names thrown at us. we have condemned ourselves as well…and i dont need to defend the decisions we have made.

i would love to hear your thoughts, but please be gentle. we making the right decision, we KNOW God will honour our desire to do the right thing, but doing the right thing isn’t always easy.

we don’t need luck, but we do need support. thank you.

CHOKING!

tell me why i don’t like mondays

1) my mailbox got wiped out today. i received an incoming attachment and opened the email and BOOM. screen went dark, computer started choking. ten minutes of panic later, i have no mailbox. ironically, i can’t send a vile email person who sent me the attachment, because i no longer have her address. please, if you have sent me an email, send me your address again.

2) sebastian pushed carys today, she hit her head and started crying and choked on all the snot and vomitted up everything she has ever eaten. did i mention that i was holding her at the time?

but why like mondays?

1) sebastian was happy to get on the school bus this morning. that is a very affirming time for me. i sometimes choke up as he boards the bus, his little white legs, the navy short pants, the white socks, he patent shoes..i watch his mouth forming the words goodbye and he blows kisses, and i know he is happy at school. although i would like it if he were learning mandarin, he is happy where he is, and although i think a second language is very important, there is nothing that is more important than being happy at school, and at this age, learning to love learning.

2) the babeolas went to music together today. we had a great time. carys didn’t love it as much, she wasn’t dancing on all fours like she was throughout the first class, but she was smiling. but jasper came into his own today. he was banging on drums, swaying back and forth, and singing. sela? she choked under pressure, did not dance today, but enjoyed playing the cymbals, and at the end of the class where we sing goodbye to everyone, when it was her turn and people were looking at her and singing goodbye, she raised her hand and started waving at them all and saying "buh-buh".

3) after naps and prior to carys’ vomit marathon, i was sitting on the ground, interacting with whatever baby was closest to me. at times, there were three of them clamouring for lap space and attention, fingers in my eyes and mouth, three babbling voices demanding my time. however, my inflated self importance met a reality check when olivia the cat sauntered into the room. carys took off for olivia, sela turned toward the ever moving cat, and jasper raised his hands to her. i was able to spend some nice one on one time with each while the other two were pampering the ever patient olivia. jasper is content not to move around the room. when i am near him if i can’t have him on my lap, he likes being beside me, touching my leg with one hand. sometimes jasper doesn’t like being in my lap, because he then has to twist his head to make eye contact. jasper is big into eye contact. his favourite look is lifting downcast eyes upwards and moving them to the corners of his eyes.

sela is big into resting her head on my shoulder, just for a minute, not long enough for a full fledged cuddle, but a quick moment, then she looks up grins, and babbles. she is very smily and talkative with those she knows. she likes standing and moving around the room with me, still needing to wrap her chubby hands around my fingers to help her walk. but the walking is coming along.

and carys has picked up her sister’s habit of pushing her tongue out of her mouth. particularly when happy, carys resembles the cover of a rolling stones album. tres cute. she is equally as fond of lap as being held. she likes being rocked while being held. back and forth, back and forth. babbling quite a bit, when she feels like it.

the babies are delighting each other a lot these days, which is good in that it takes the pressure off sebastian. poor seb, to quote garfield, somedays he is just not in the mood to be adored. but the babies find each other quite funny and are easing off sebastian, which is good.

magnificent is at a dinner do, there are four children asleep in the bedroom, and i would love to break my 4am to sleep pattern and follow them to slumberland. because tomorrow is tuesday!

i am a universally unrecognised critic.

when it comes to cinema, i have taken no courses, cannot write thesis on the brilliance of allen, or even of the latest star wars film (mainly because i don’t want to see it.) but i DO have quite definite opinions on lots of movies, and am stunned at how often people disagree with me. you would think my parents (who are at least partially via nature and nuture) for my funny bone, would side with me re: brilliant movies. only sometimes.

in 2000, i told my parents that they had to see magnolia. the cast brilliant, the plots clever, the dialogue concise and so evident of pain. did i mention the cast? everyone i love was in that movie. and i’m no huge tom cruise fan, but he was AMAZING. all the movie needed was mark ruffalo and cate blanchett and it would have been perfection. my parents hated it. and while critics generally gave it good reviews with a few proviso’s, none of my friends liked it either. magnificent liked it enough to buy me the DVD.

RUSHMORE. bill murray! olivia williams! excellence! not according to my parents, who stopped watching halfway through. that should be illegal.

GROUNDHOG DAY – bill murray! critics didn’t start liking this film until a few years ago, when the big zen movement pushed it to popularity. huh. some of us liked it in the 1980’s.

CURDLED – this 1999 gem was a spin off from pulp fiction. do you remember when bruce willis leaves the fight and jumps into a cab? the blood enthusiastic  taxi driver? well, tarantino made a film around her obsession…and it was brilliant. and no critic or parent or friend agreed with me.

PLEASANTVILLE – reece and toby, really before either of them hit it big. william h macy deserves any exclamation point i put after his name…!!!!!!! and joan allen!! don knotts put in a cameo. how could it not be an excellent film. beautiful cinematography. critics generally gave it good reviews but slammed it for being too obvious with the message, but i loved it. william – i’ll make you dinner.

finally, two movies my parents and i can agree on (magnificent refuses to get drawn into the discussion): we loved ISHTAR and THE THREE AMIGOS. i’m not going to defend these movies, i thought they were brilliant. they always make me happy.

YOU CAN COUNT ON ME, MARVIN’S ROOM, BULWORTH (lots of b’s!), ONE THOUSAND MILES, BOWFINGER!, THE THREE SEASONS, MARS ATTACKS, BEFORE SUNRISE/SUNSET, AMISTAD, THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS, JACKIE BROWN…and this isn’t even touching pre-1990.

it seems not a lot of people have seen these movies. and these are movies really worth seeing, in this critical opinion.

then, we watch THE RETURN OF THE KING, which collected enough academy awards to outweight a hobbit; and at the end of the three hour plus movie, i am thinking,

if they had let me into the editing room, i could have shaved this baby down to a cool 2 hours. if that. i also was pretty unimpressed with frodo…did he do anything more than make bad judgements, faint and whinge about his destiny? samwise, you should have hung out with the cool group. and that blonde chick hitting on aragon. not cool, baby. liv tyler is a big favourite of magnificent charles’, he wasn’t impressed.

is it just me going bonkers, or did two of my posts vanish?

various approaches to take to this realisation:

self confidence doubt: why my posts? were they so bad elvis the internet king removed them?

relationship doubt: did magnificent charles? is he angry with me? (given the fact that i am at home right now while HE is at the birthday party with sebastian, this is a possible option.) but would he pull a blog? did i ever really know him?

sanity doubt: am i losing my mind? maybe i never even posted.

enough of this, i have some catching up to do.

this is infuriating. now i have to write trying to recall what i wrote earlier which ensures it will be second rate no matter how i write it.

i will write this down before i forget it…my next blog will be on movies i loved/appreciated and everyone around me only tolerated.

but first…today’s topic which was also friday’s topic. (!) (ANGRY!)

when i was a little girl, we had a globe that i think my dad got free when he signed up to national geographic magazine. i used to turn the globe around, and look at names. intriguing names. places that i would decide i had to visit. the m’s (minsk, mandalay, marrakesh, morocco) tended to be my favourites, but there were so many others….and while we’re on the topic..how many san jose’s can one globe hold? (plenty). how can anyone know the way to san jose when there are so many of them dotted around the place.

finally, later than most, i started travelling. and here are some images i will always remember, whether i lived there or travelled there.

NORTHERN LIGHTS – the tale says, whistle and they’ll come to you. It is worth the pain to put your tongue to your chapped lips and moisten them, so you can whistle. although the lights never stand still, while staring up at the blackened sky you do feel they are approaching you. green, pink, silvery-yellow, blue-ish…the northern lights are stunning. you lose out if you are standing inside while watching the lights…you need to be outdoors in the minus forty weather, with stinging face and tearing eyes to watch the shimmering lights dance across the sky.

THE UAE – we spent the millenium camping in the UAE. we had driven for a while, and NOT gotten stuck thanks to fantastic R&W driving abilities. rolling ruddy-gold hills, the blazing sun overhead. we stopped and set up camp. looked on a map and realised we were in oman. a uae wadi looks pretty similar to a oman wadi. there was nothing but the hills and scrubby bush nearby, yet at the appropriate time, when it was call to prayer, we heard it. we were that close to a place of worship, just as the mandates of islam demand. we watched the last sunset of the millenium slide beneath a hill, sat back and watched the stars, realising that at the last millenium party, people were living in tents and watching the stars as well.

MONTEVERDE RAIN FOREST – standing in the rain forest, you check your watch which has condensation building up under the glass face, and even though it is in the middle of the afternoon, you have to squint, because it is dusky. the canopy overhead, the determined leaves, subsidiary trees and branches entwined tightly around each other have shut out the light. you feel like you are breathing under a blanket, and in reality, you are. nature’s blanket.

INDIA’S TRAIN STATIONS – first off, i travelled throughout india by train by myself and never felt unsafe. but the train stations. packed with bodies who obviously lived there permanently. how they were sitting there fanning themselves, waiting for dusk, that two hour respite in their day, nestled between the nailing heat of the day and the evening, when chill creeps between the fibres of their threadbare blankets. i remember how the look in their eyes didn’t change when i gave them money, and how i realised the money i was giving them wouldn’t really change their lives, maybe only how full their stomachs were at the end of the day. i remember the people i hadn’t given money to, pulling at my clothes and arms.

MOUNT EVEREST – i was so stupid. i believed that mount everest would be standing there, alone in the horizon, standing tall and majestic. so what a surprise to be in a wiggy waggy six seater plane at 6am and have the tour guide say, and over to your left is mount everest. excuse me? could you be a little more precise? there were many mountains, all tall, all daunting, all looking like they could capture the ambition and dreams of many. i did not suspect that mount everest would actually fade into its surroundings. was i disappointed that i didn’t immediately recognise everest? no, it was better that way. mythology would agree…it is safer when it is kept with its own.

SEA TURTLES – we were in the maldives, snorkelling, and a sea turtle lazily swam by. according to our guide, he was easily over 150 years old. the turtle actually resembled albert einstein, folded eyes, a slight smile, a wrinkled neck and a slightly unkempt appearance. and he kept flapping along and smiling, surrounded by a few of his (probable) relatives.

Tess_tajTHE TAJ MAHAL – what a testament to love. intricate excellence. i wonder how the shah jahran’s other wives felt, or if they even cared.

THE GREAT WALL – it began as independent walls for different states when it was first started in 7BC, became one unified building two dynasties later in 8BC. it was built as a defensive structure. it stretches for about 6,700 kilometres at a height of 10 metres and a width of 5 metres. how did they do it? how did they know the angles, weights and balances without computers and textbooks and "advisors"? how many lives did it cost? and you cant help but look at the steep mountain the wall rests on and wonder, wasn’t nature enough to keep out the bad guys? i was releived to know the wall was not just a folly, but was imparative in keeping nomadic tribes out. could you commit to a cause for not only your lifetime, but your child’s as well? there are bodies buried in that wall. bodies that didn’t die during battle, but while painstakingly involved in this pursuit of protection.

CHINA BEACH – walking down that silent expanse of wide beach, you notice colours. white sand, green and beige trees, the blue blue water. impossible to fathom how much red blood has sank into the sand, seeped into the water, was splattered against those trees.

TIANANMEN SQUARE – it is larger than you think, and gives away nothing of the horror it hosted, the dreams of democracy that so briefly shone. located in a bustling area of beijing, the square has a quietness about it. not just tourists speak in hushed voices while walking across the square, it is an eerily silent place.

STATUE OF LIBERTY – call me a cliche. i don’t care. i went to ellis island and spent a whole day there, flipping through books, listening to the guides talk. hating how the building was filling with people, trying to imagine the crowded conditions on the boat bringing me over to this new world, how parents must have felt when thier children died en route, the guilt ("should we have waited until he was better?) and the agony of throwing that lifeless body overboard. imagining being turned away because of a cough and fever, while my family was shuttled into this new world. how the seasickness, vermin, sorrow and discomfort must have given way to hope, then the first sighting of the lady was made.

the statue reads:

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door."

wow.

THE HANDOVER – magnificent and i were completely in agreeance that hong kong should be handed back to the chinese in 1997. but we found ourselves emotional during the handover. the day the governor left his residence for the last time, we were there. the streets were packed and policemen pushed back throngs of journo’s and citizens alike. by walking into hong kong botanical gardens and sliding down the embankment, charles and i landed a fantastic view of patten leaving his home, and were surprised at how emotional we felt. there was excitement about the handover, but there was an undercurrent of sadness. later that night, on top of the pedder building, overlooking chater square, and another party held on the roof of the mandarin oriental, as the clock approached midnight, as if there was a choir director, voices on the streets below, opposite to and across from us began singing GOD SAVE THE QUEEN. 150 years of rule, and then to leave. as they should, but my goodness. later that night, we were walking home (it seemed everyone was walking home that night, taxis were impossible to get), passing couples in formal wear, excited locals, and intoxicated partyiers (what are we celebrating?), we kept hearing the same song over and over again. we would walk a block, and a couple walking towards us would be singing it, a few people ahead of us on the stairs by the escalators were humming it. and forever, when i remember back to the handover, i hear:

Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and days of auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne

how involved should friends be?

divine comments, posters. absolutely wonderful. i am wondering which one to use first. unfortunately, i don’t think the comment about my chest can be used, as i cant imagine anyone thinking i actually paid for these!!!

i got a very thought provoking email from a friend. her sister "heather" is about to start ivf.

the sister knows, the parents know, and some close friends.  the sister asked, "how can i best support "heather"."

there is no one best way. people are individuals, each have their own coping mechanisms and want support in different ways.

one internet acquaintance told her family she and her husband were undergoing IVF and didn’t tell them anything else until she informed them, IT WORKED I AM PREGNANT.

my second ivf, right before retrieval when i started developing OHSS, i stopped talking about the IVF to my family. changed the topic because i was so sure transfer would be cancelled, and i couldn’t talk about it to anyone except magnificent, who had my wrath unleashed on him hourly. (his response: does this mean we can have sex? always looking for the rainbow, is my man.)

another friend gave her friends and family updates every time she heard them.

the information each couple shares is completely up to them.

but, i do believe this general bit of information can only benefit.

so shelley, here you go.

educate yourself on the ivf process. know when retrieval is, what transfer does, the difference between blastocyst and emrbyo, the benefits of a two day versus a five day transfer. know that the uterine lining should have a triple stripe, that blood tests are taken and ultrasounds done to check how the body is responding to the drugs. know that there will be daily injections. know the difference between progesterone and lupron. be aware that there are excess hormones floating through the body, and those, plus the stress of the situation, make your sister likely to be more emotional than she might normally be.

if heather does unburden herself, it makes it so much easier if she doesn’t have to explain the process. ie:

i am so frustrated. they did an ultrasound today and my body isn’t ready! i have to stay on the drugs

is your lining not thick enough or not enough follicles?

so much easier than:

i am so frustrated. they did an ultrasound today and my body isn’t ready! i have to stay on the drugs

but isn’t your body always ready?

no, during your cycle the thickness of your womb steadily increases. there will be a triple stripe when the uterus is ready, and the thickness is best around 10 although anywhere from 7-13 is acceptable. the follicles, there is one dominant follicle on the left side and some laggers, but nothing, on the right.

it is also a show of support to educate yourself about what heather is going through.

XOXOXOXOXXOXOXOXOXOXOXO

giving credit where it is definitely due, to boulder, who is not as dumb as a rock.

but don’t offer your opinon on anything. Seriously. Be perfectly non-judgemental. Say anything in your brain before you let it out of your mouth, because you can be amazed at what a cycling woman can feel is judgemental. And don’t share her story with anyone. It is her choice to decide who, what & when to tell. And it is her husband’s choice too. He may think that telling you is simply one step too close to telling his mother-in-law. Or not.

Don’t feel hurt if she shuts down in the middle of the game, either. She may feel comfortable one moment & then realize she’s over-shared with her IRL friends/family.

When I have friends who have questioned my decision not to tell my family about a cycle, I say, "well, did you call your mom or dad & tell them every time you’d had sex while trying to make your child?" See, there are some things you feel ok telling a girlfriend but not your mom or your cousin, or maybe a even a sister.

The best question you can ever ask is, "how does that make YOU feel?" Second best is "can I do anything for you?" or "how can I help you?"

Never say "I know how you feel." Please.

XO XO XO XO XO XO XO

people say (and mean), i wish i could help you, when they hear of your inferility stuff…educating yourself to understand what heather is going through is an active way to support a relative or friend.

to those of you who have had troubles starting a family, or those of you who have done ivf, what other ways are there to best support a loved one undergoing IVF?

some deep holiday monday observations:

1) CONFIRMATION OF THE HYPOCRISY OF TESS : i don’t believe in buddha but i am happy that charles gets a day off to celebrate his birthday

2) not everyone has triplets.. between:

wiping (bottoms or floors)
singing (at music class or trying to distract them in the crucial seconds before they  projectile vomit)
reading (labels of medication trying to determine which will put them to sleep for the longest or sandra boynton books
playing (with the ends of my hair in a distracted fashion or with the triplets)
clapping (yay! they’re asleep or with their tiny hands while they sit in my lap)

i spend a goodly amount of time with sebastian, jasper, sela and carys. you might say i am used to them. (good thing because their one year warranty is expiring on june 1). but people who don’t spend a lot time with us (strangers at park n shop, acquaintances, people in various groups, believe me, the list does go on) are not used to them. it seems strange to get all this attention because for me, this is my life. and i don’t see it as extra-ordinary!

3) the same people unfamiliar with the triplet lifestyle do not mean to offend when they comment:
– so did you use fertility drugs
– are they natural
– triplets? i’d kill myself
– better you than me

fellow MOMS (mums of multiples) have differing ways of handling the queries:

so did you use fertility drugs?

(challenge them) – why do you want to know?
(turn it around) – oh, you can’t get pregnant?
(rise above it) – ignore it
(answer) – yes. (this of course can lead to the interesting follow up question, "well who had the problem, you or your husband?"
(get creative) – no, i was involved with three different men at the time (biologically not a correct answer, but it is a guaranteed way to ensure that you are no longer known as "the woman with triplets." you’ve got a new reputation!)

are they natural? (they want to know the same as above, but are wording it differently)

(challenge them) – what do you mean?
(be sarcastic) – no, they’re plastic
(be joky) – oh you mean like organic. no, i ate processed food, and even white bread the entire pregnancy. i feel bad about it now, but you know cravings.
(rise above it) – ignore it

triplets? i’d kill myself

(challenge them) – no, after a while, it just seems normal. because it is your world
(sarcastic) – you don’t have to have triplets to kill yourself
(nice) – not sure, never been nice when answering this comment

better you than me

(challenge them) – what on earth are you suggesting?
(sarcastic) – isn’t that the truth…my kids think so too, and don’t even get my husband started on the topic of you. tres unflattering
(let’s be hurtful) – you’re right, your body just LOOKS like it’s been through a triplet pregnancy. at least i got the babies!!!
(nice) – not sure, never been nice when responding to this comment.

now, i have never used this one.

but i am really tempted.

the next time i get a really agressive woman pushing a pram who says,

"fertility drugs are the reason you got triplets" (in a very snotty manner),

to look at her child and respond, (sweetly with a touch of concern),

oh, you and your husband being unattractive, that’s the reason your child is ugly.

NOW

you know i never will, but i need to smile about something during those vomit wipes or while i am singing "quack, quack quack quack cockadoodle do" for the 12th consectutive time in order to prevent a carys spew.

would love to hear any other brilliant responses or questions.
merci.

there is a wide diversity of opinions that declare what determine your perspective. the weather, where you are in your cycle, your weight, if rob and amber won the amazing race…whatever.

however, all these opinions are wrong. it all comes down to sleep.
and i can say this, because i did not get any last night. and i am an irrational beast because of it.

where did it all go wrong? we had a truly GREAT day yesterday, visiting at (unruffled) denby’s house, and the kids had a great time. jasper was dazzled with the females, and carys and sela saw role models! then we got home, and learned that mila’s mobile phone, which she had accidentally left in the taxi, HAD BEEN RETURNED TO OUR FLAT. incredible!

babies had a good sleep, everything was going really well. in the afternoon, sela was on a roll, crawling everywhere and babbling away. while she stormed across the floor and back, jasper sat beside me with one hand on my knee, and carys pulled books from the bookshelf. it was easy going and it was wonderful. i got an email from charles saying he was having an incredible weekend.

and then it was that wonderful hour, when the kids were quiet. i started my taxes, caught up on some work, read some emails (more on that next week), and cut up some broccoli.

at midnight, i was in the nursery checking on sebastian. for the last week we have not been waking sebastian up in the middle of the night to do wees. and, so far, every morning, his bob the builder pants (ie: bobs) have been dry. but i just wanted to check up on his dryness factor.

while in there, i heard a crinkle and rustle, and when i turned to exit, saw sela staring at me. she was standing and looking cute. i picked her up, laid her down and left the room. ten minutes later, she started crying. i was in the playroom at this point, and after five minutes, i went in the room and noted that jasper was stirring. i laid sela down again, patted her tushie for about 15 seconds and she drifted off.

same thing happened at around 1 am and 2am. remembering that i dont’ sleep well when charles is out of town, i of course was awake for these crying sprees. again, i patted, again she drifted off. i was just beginning the drift off process myself around 3.30 when i heard sela again. this cry was different…and when i went to her i saw she was in pain. i picked her up and took her out of the room (which we rarely do when we have middle of the night wailers) and saw that she has a tooth coming in. wondered briefly if i had been grateful that sebastian never had teething issues.

i took sela to bed with me and tried to get her to settle there. instead she would lay whimpering. and moving a lot. neither of us were sleeping, so we watched a fish called wanda. given that it is filmed in britain, i see it as an educational show. then there was a james stewart/judy garland movie called the ziegfield girl, and we had to watch that, because we were both still awake and well, it is a historical movie.

every once and a while i would get hopeful. sela would be draped over my chest her torso bent and her legs on the mattress, and she would be still. and i would think, sorry judy, i don’t care how well choreographed your number is..if this kid is asleep so am i. just inevitably, usually just as i dared to hope she might actually be asleep, sela would raise herself up, look at me and change the topic of my thoughts.

after judy became a star and jimmy’s girlfriend died, sela was really awake, and getting talkative. grabbing her feet and conversing with them. not listening to my side of the conversation which amounted to, sela, will you please go to sleep. i will give you my engagement ring. just go to sleep.

she just got happy when i became involved in the conversation. why talk to your feet when mumma is apparently awake.

i grabbed her and took her out to the living room area. closed the doors. it was 5.15. how could this child be functioning for goodness sake. olivia was ecstatic to see us and meowed non stop. sela was thrilled. finally an active conversational partner. i put sela on the floor and she crawled around, but was always coming back to me to get my input on things. she wanted to be picked up, she wanted to be put down. she wanted to stand, she wanted to crawl.

finally it was 7am, it was time for her breakfast, everyone else was awake, and i suddenly turned into TERRIBLE MUM. daylight touching my haggard features turned me into a wraith. if someone had touched my twitching eye or the pounding spot on the top of my head, i probably would have turned to dust. if i could be guaranteed sleep, i would have done it myself.

every noise was magnified several million times. doors shutting, chairs being pulled, the tear of velcro being pulled across a nappy. laughs resembled the sound you get when ice is put in the blenders, and it seemed sebastian was whinging. you just have no idea what a bad mother i was this morning. (very).

even as i type this, still top-toothless sela is standing near me, stretching to be picked up, extending her neck so i can see how she is yearning to be held. i have ignored her for 20 minutes and now i must end this post so i can go over to my own little ziegfield girl for a cuddle.
